The Barbiecore landscape of 2023 is seemingly boundless from a shopping standpoint, especially with brand and retailer tie-ins to the movie now numbering in the hundreds across the realms of fashion, beauty, food, houseware, pets, and even video games. But Greta Gerwig's big-screen take on the deified Mattel doll (and the omnipresent marketing campaign that's accompanied it) was the metaphorical Mento dropped into its churning saccharine seas. The trend cycle has reached a Pantone 219 C-drenched fever pitch in Barbiecore, the aesthetic du jour defined by all things kitschy, nostalgic, unflinchingly feminine, and - above all - pink.īarbiecore initially emerged as an offshoot of the BimboTok movement of 2020 and picked up momentum from a monochromatic magenta Valentino collection last fall, as previously reported by Mashable's Meera Navlakha.
